What constitutes an exacerbation?

I'm 72, diagnosed with Stage 3 COPD. If I get short of breath during a walk, and need to stop for 2-3 minutes, does that constitute an exacerbation?

  1. I believe this is a common behaviour for those of us with COPD. Increasing SOB is common with exertion. Please talk to your doctor about this if it continues to become an issue and you are not comfortable with how long it takes you to recover. Barbara Moore (site moderator)

    1. Hi Mcgratht, and thanks for this excellent question. An exacerbation, in the most general of terms, is considered to be an sudden worsening of COPD symptoms that requires treatment.

I thought this article, which focuses on this very topic, would provide you with some additional insight for your concern: https://copd.net/basics/acute-exacerbations/. I do hope you find it is helpful to read.

Depending on the details of the symptoms you are describing, you may want to discuss this further with your physician. What do you think?

      Wishing you well,
