Does NOT using inhalers reduce your life expectancy?

I was diagnosed 10 or more years ago and have only ever had one blue inhaler prescribed when I was due to visit a polluted air area of China. I was advised to take it in case I had problems. I forget to take it and it eventually became out dated.

We like many other countries, have the coronavirus and it was suggested that I have a salmeterol 25 microgram inhaler along with a new blue one. But, I don't appear to need these as my COPD does not interfere with my life (unless I have grown used to my condition).

My question is; if I don't use any of these inhalers until I find it necessary am I being stupid? Am I reducing my life expectancy?

I ride my bike everywhere, walk everywhere, travel everywhere and don't have any difficulties so wonder if I start using them, will I NEED to use them by becoming dependent to early?

  1. Hi makem - It sounds like you're really managing yourself and your COPD very well. The fact that you're so active is a great thing.

I'm sure your doctor prescribed your inhalers for a reason, so I would certainly ask if they are meant to take daily or as needed. Sometimes they're prescribed to be taken only when you feel you need relief. These are considered "rescue" inhalers. So, it may be that you simply haven't needed to use it. Which is a great thing!

The Salmeterol is a little different in how it works. However, I would follow up with the doctor and ask how they intended you to take both.

    1. Hi lyn,

The doctor prescribed them because I may have problems during the period of the 'virus' which for a COPD suffer could be years I suppose as it will most likely, reoccur.

I just wonder if I would benefit from starting now when I have no apparent need, at some later date. Or wehther
