Antibiotics - Needing them, Insurance Problems

This week I needed antibiotics to hopefully hold off pneumonia. There was changes in my breathing and mucus color. My doctor responded immediately and ordered steroid and antibiotic prescription. My pharmacy called with that my antibiotics were not being coveerd for the insurance company BC/BS wanted a pre-authorization for them (Azithromycin /Z-pak). Well that stumped me, right?

I contacted the insurance company (BC/BS) to find out why. Their answer was something like this. Because I had taken this antibiotic with in the last 60 days they needed pre-authorization from the doctor to confirm it was NOT for a COVID related problem. Mine was not.

Back to the doctor I called and thank goodness they were able to get the pre-authorization handled with in 24 hrs. In the mean time I was not about to wait to long, so I used GoodRX to get my prescription filled at a lower cost then just out of the pocket expense that was my other option for that 24 hrs.

Just wanted others to know just in case your are in of an antibiotic and run in to this problem or contact your insurance company to see if they too have this stipulation, thus you can get your doctor to get pre-authorization at the time of the prescription.

Just a little bump in the road.....

  1. Hi (Doris), and thanks so much for sharing this story with the community. This is a perfect example of just what sticklers 3rd party payers can be. But, the main 'take away', from your story is the way through it!! By not letting this deter you and, having a thoroughly supportive and capable physician, you were able to receive the medication (antibiotic), that you needed to help to fend off the possibility of pneumonia. Add to that your ingenuity and initiative in using an alternate type discount (Good Rx), and the problem was addressed financially, too.
You are a role model for us all!! This is what self advocacy is all about, Doris!
    Nice work!
    All the best,
