What is a good amount of exercise for COPD?

I've read we should be doing 30 minutes continuous exercise and I've read just do what you can. Is the goal to get to 30 minutes continuous?

  1. ,
The goal should be to do what you can and try to improve as much as you can. Even if it is only by a minute or two.
There is no reason to overdo it and cause more problems. The main idea is to get your body moving and help get
your breathing harder to help improve your muscle tone and blood flow to your organs. Any amount of exercise
is good and you should try to do some every day. I think the 30 minutes continuous is just a general guideline
or starting point. But it is in no way set in stone.

Thank you, Leon! I am keeping my focus on being healthy and doing all I can to stay that way. But as we all know, the older we get, the higher the chance of something cropping up. We shall see. I will keep you all posted after my doctor visit in 6 weeks. Take care!

    2. Thanks for the response, Dminor - I am pulling for you BIG TIME!
I like your approach -stay focused and keep your demeanor as I know you do!
As I see it (besides what you said), the older we get the quicker time goes by - that is what I am feeling! These 6 weeks will probably fly by!! Hang in there!

  2. Hi katw, and thanks for your post and question - it's a good one! I know we have had several conversations
during over the last month or so and we are glad to see you are continuing to engage with the community.
I see our good community member, , has already responded to your inquiry and, I agree with all he has shared.
I also have something to contribute. In view of your (valid) concerns about exercising and staying active,
I thought (in addition to what Dminor has shared), you might want to read any of the many articles we have published which focus on this very topic. I do hope you find the information is helpful in a practical way.
    Wishing you well,

    1. You have gotten some good advice here. Your best bet is to ask your doctor what they think would be appropriate for you. However, it's also worth mentioning that there are studies that suggest breaking up your workout into smaller chunks is just as good for you, or possibly even better since you're moving around at different times instead of all at once. Bottom line, as long as you're trying it's a great thing! -Melissa, team member

      1. I like to walk and think, pray, or just enjoy the beauty. You might be surprised how far you can walk with other things on your mind. This is great on the breathing as well.

        1. Hi grlloyd, and thanks for weighing in and sharing your perspective on COPD and exercise. You make a good point - one might be surprised by how much walking can be accomplished with something on the mind! I have experienced that myself - walking the boardwalk each day for 3 miles. Of course, there is the distinct advantage of looking out at the Atlantic Ocean! This combined with thoughts, plans, singing, and focusing on the walk, too.
          We appreciate your input here.
          All the best,
