I’ve read it can cause dementia but can someone please let me know If these symptoms are normal with copd. He’s on oxygen at night and an inhaler. Are next step is Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Any thoughts? Please help me get some peace of mind.

  1. Hi emilymccartney72, and thanks for your post. I'm sorry to hear you're going through all this now, and are having some concerns with managing your dad's diagnosis and condition. It's all understandable in the face of a new diagnosis for a loved one!

While we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), your concerns certainly warrant a response. Since this is all new for you, your dad, and your family, I thought you might gain some additional insight by familiarizing yourself with the COPD condition.

First, this article focuses on the basics of COPD: https://copd.net/basics/. And next, this article explains the symptoms associated with COPD: https://copd.net/symptoms/.

Since COPD affects each patient differently - treatment, although similar, can vary from patient to patient as well. It is common for some patients to be using inhaler(s) for medication and supplemental oxygen therapy as well. For more specifics regarding your dad's circumstances, it would be best if you discussed his condition, symptoms, and plans for treatment with his physician. That would be the best health care professional to guide you through the expected care of your father.

I do hope this brief reply has provided you with information that you find to be helpful. Please do check back and let us know how you (and your dad!) are doing.

    All the best,
    Leon (site moderator COPD.net)

    1. Hi emilymccartney72 - I'm sorry about your the recent diagnosis of COPD with your dad. It can be so scary to deal with a new illness. But, you've come to the right place and hopefully as you look through the site and read the article Leon provided, you'll find some answers.

As Leon already mentioned, each person experiences COPD differently. However, there are some "common" symptoms and signs that many people with COPD go through.

I highly recommend keeping a diary of all your fathers symptoms and any questions that arise related to them. This will help you ask the right questions when you get to the doctors office. I know it sounds like a simple thing, but you'd be surprised how often you forget to ask the important things in the pressure of the moment.

Be sure you find a healthcare team that you Dad (and the family) feel comfortable with. You need to be able to ask questions and not feel rushed.

I wish you the best and please come back to ask us any questions that may come to mind.
