Tips for guaifenesin

Does anybody take guaifenesin long term every day ?

  1. Hi. Welcome to our community, and thank you for bringing up this important question. It's great to have you here, and I'm looking forward to hearing from others who can share their personal experiences with this medication. In the meantime, one of my fellow contributors (a pharmacist) has written an informative article on this very topic that I think you may find helpful. I will post a link to her article here (https://copd.net/clinical/mucus-secretion-drugs). I hope you find the article insightful. If you have any more questions or need further information, feel free to ask. We're here to support you on your journey.. John. community moderator.

    1. Thank you John . I will definitely read the article.

  2. Hi! I do, and I will annoy the heck out of any doctor who says not to. I just believe they don't know and are taking advice from someone else. On my first trip through inpatient rehab, I had severe congestion (with pneumonia) after a week in the hospital. My Doctor and respiratory therapist put me on Mucinex - 1200mg x2 daily extended release. It helped tremendously, and I have stayed on it ever since, with no issues, and orders from all my doctors. So, to all those articles and naysayers here, I say bull! It has been a huge help to me and still works very well after 3 straight years. My advice to you is to take it, and if your doctor doesn't like it, get a new doctor. I may considered by some here to be somewhat militant with doctors, but that's the way I see it. The stuff works very well for me and I highly recommend it. No disrespect to anyone, but I consider it indispensable in my daily meds. Deciding if it works for you should be your decision.

    1. I like to think that I have found the middle ground with my doctors. I question and listen to others that suffer so that I can ask the question properly. I did have a problem when I went to the doctor with what I thought was a solution. His job was done at that point and he took the rest of my appointment as down time. Now, I never present with the answer to my problem. I only present with educated questions and I let the doctor give me his answer. It could be different than what you thought. Medical investigation on lungs has only just started in earnest the last few years. Doctors are learning every day and although they may not know everything, they know lots about you and how you work. How you get them to educate yourself is up to your approach. I was diagnosed with GERD just lately and it answered a variety of questions. Its funny that I was never diagnosed before this. This is one example of letting your doctor off the hook by self- diagnosing it to be bloat. I accepted that and let it be my truth. But really what did I know about Bloat or Gerd. Thank you for asking the tough questions. Barbara Moore (Moderator)
