SPo2 levels 86%

Should I be concerned about low SPo2 levels during sleep? They fell to 86% last night according to my Apple Watch. I have had mild COPD for 3 years and my SPo2 averages 96% whilst awake. I’m very tired every day and apart from several chest infections and headaches I seem to be fine. Just wondering if this is normal or should I seek further advice. Many Thanks, Thom.

  1. Hi Thom, rather these numbers are bad or good, I could not tell you for we are all a little different. Personally I would seek further advice from my Doctor, or better yet a Pulmonologist ( lung specialist) would be better. Always tell them everything, especially letting them know everything you mentioned above, having a lot of chest infections and headaches is not something to mess with. There could be some additional medication(s) that you could be prescribed to help keep those little buggers away. .

    1. Hi , and welcome! I see you are a new member here, having joined early this morning earlier today. You may be aware that we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), but your concern certainly warrants a reply.
I see our good member, , has already joined in the conversation and provided her own special brand of support.
I concur with her suggestion, too! Going 'by the book', your nighttime oxygen saturation level (as recorded on your Apple watch), would be considered to be somewhat low. As dltld said, each patient with COPD is different - my comment assessing percentages, is 'by the book'. The most prudent action for you to take next would be to report your circumstances to your own private medical doctor (PMD). The physician will be able to guide you in this regard.
Please do check back and let us know how this all turns out for you.
      Good luck!

      1. Thank you for your comments, and indeed your advice. I have since seen my doctor and have been referred for a sleep study. Doctor said a lot of my problems indicate sleep apnea is the cause, time will tell.

        1. Hi . I hope the sleep study brings you answers and relief. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea and you need any information or resources, know that we have a community for sleep apnea as well: SleepApnea.Sleep-Disorders.net. It is not as active as this community since people tend not to need suport once they find a device and become comfortable with it, but there are lots of great articles you might find helpful. I moderate there as well and my husband has used a CPAP for more than a decade. So, please reach out if you need anything at all. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

      2. Thom This is great Thom! Not that I want you to have sleep apnea, but just able to finally get this checked and hopefully some sort of answer for you. Answers can be stressful, but at the same time they can be a relief just to have the answer. I wish you much luck with this up and coming appt and please would like to hear how it goes if you are willing to share!
