Shortness of breath when bending over

So many of the things I do involve bending over. For example gardening, feeding and brushing my cats, really anything that involves bending over. My chest becomes very tight and shortness of breath. It takes a while to recover. Why is this happening? Anyone else experiencing this?

  1. yes I do as well...actually any activity that requires bending, such as vacuuming or sweeping can sit me down to rest in a hurry. I do not understand the need to upload an image...what does that mean...I didn't need this previously, and I realize it is not your rule, but can you help me?

    1. Hi . You don't have to upload an image. The button shows up every time we create posts as an option in case you want to include one. Feel free to simply ignore it. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Bending over seems to force what little breath I have in my lungs OUT of my body. I can't do anything that requires staying bent over for more than a few seconds. When I do straighten back up, it takes a while to catch my breath and stop panting like a racehorse. However, I have recently tried the Trelegy inhaler, and I swear it's a miracle drug! I'm breathing easier than I have in years,. I hardly ever have to use my rescue Albuterol inhaler now, and have had ZERO flare-ups since I started using it. And believe me, I was having frequent and severe flare-ups before. You might want to ask your doctor about it. I hope your health improves, or at least doesn't worsen. And no- the manufacturers are not paying me to endorse their product! Lol

    1. How awesome that Trelegy has helped, . That must lifechanging for you. I hope it continues to bring you relief for a long time to come. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

    2. Everything you wrote I have experienced. My husband made raised beds for gardening so I wouldn’t have to bend over. It really helps. My biggest problem is lifting things. I have my washer downstairs & my dryer upstairs. To lift it upstairs is very hard on me. I have to sit down on the bed until I can recover.
My doctor had me try Trelegy. I have never felt so good on any other drug.
It’s been exactly the same for me, a miracle drug. I don’t use my rescue inhaler as much. I had bad exacerbations which would worsen my condition & it could take over a month to get any energy back. I haven’t had a flare up in years. I still have the same problem with lifting but I’ve found ways to make it easier on myself. Due to ZERO flare ups I feel like a new person. That I have hope again. That I have a more promising future. I wish everyone could have this happen to them. To get a med that will give you some control back. I believe my lung function has improved. I will be forever grateful & thrilled for you too.

  3. Hi , and . I found this quote in this article (https://copd.net/living/talk-lungs) that explains why you become short or breath when bending: "Because many of us with COPD have inflated lungs at the severe stage and above, we can become very short of breath and distressed when bending down because we are crushing the bottom of our lungs that are in the diaphragm area."
I hope it helps. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Thanks for the info. I've been on Trelegy since it came out. I agree. What difference!

      1. I love hearing all of the positive stories from people that are using Trelegy. It seems like a real game changer! The only problem is it's still not covered universally and it can be hard for a lot of people to afford. I hope that's not the case with you. And hopefully as time goes by and it has more time on the market, it will be more accessible to everyone that wants to try it. How long have you been on it? I hope you continue to do well. -Melissa, team member
