Jamie - Easy there! There's no reason you can't live a long full life. I fired my first doctor when I was hospitalized the first time for my COPD, when he bluntly and rudely scared the crap out of me because he didn't care. The truth is, most doctors and other health care professionals are caring and helpful and positive, not cold and rude, and you don't have to put up with it - you deserve better. If your pulmonologist or other doctor is not fully supportive, get a better doctor! I did, and never looked back (except to file a complaint). My caregivers take wonderful care of me and every single one is highly supportive. So I will tolerate nothing less. I am, after all, a paying customer, without whom they would have no job. That said, I always ask a million questions about everything and They answer. FYI - the best answer to fear is knowledge. The more you learn, the more you know, the less worry you will feel. So relax. That 5-year thing is bogus. There are no definite answers, but there is most certainly much that can be done from where you are now to promote good health and longevity. Meanwhile, I highly recommend your first priority is to find a doctor that is highly supportive. It makes all the difference. And hang around here, I've learned a lot!
