Does anyone else have speaking problems with COPD?

I sound awful when I speak. I've heard myself on my iPhone when recording video segments. I had a painter in the house who asked if he could call 911 on a day with high humidity. My son looks alarmed, and asks if I'm okay repeatedly. My grand-daughter would make this panting sound when she was very little, based on hearing me. I can't breathe through my nose.

It's near the point where I don't want to talk on the phone, or have family and friends around. I'll be very lonely since I need people. Anybody dealt with this, and how.

  1. I have had the same issue as well. I do not know what cause it I get a shaky kind of voice and sometimes it sounds like I have a sore throat. I take Trelegy and some days it makes my throat hurt and my voice is really bad then! Hope you are doing great today 😀

    1. Hi twovillages
I have experienced that with my COPD. My voice got huskier from smoking. Then with COPD it would get raspy. My doctor tried different things, even lidocaine, to see if it would make a different. I also started getting sore throats, so I used a variety of lozenges. In the past few years, I developed dry mouth. (I also have dry eyes. Dry skin, etc. So that is likely a contributer for my experience.) I also have vocal cord dysfunction, which could also contribute.
This is also why I don’t like talking on the phone. Sometimes it’s difficult being understood, which gets frustrating for me and those on the other end of the phone.
Some lozenges do help. Some mention that lemon drops work. I am not one for sour things, yet my husband had some little sour balls left from Halloween, strangely that did help.
Talk to your doctor about his/her recommendations. Please, let us know how you are doing.

      1. Thank you both for your replies. I never thought about using a lozenge. I'll look into it. Thank goodness I can message somebody without speaking.
