Prednisone

I was curious how anyone who has been prescribed Prednisone, has liked or disliked it. I am just out of the hospital (as of this past Monday) for a bleeding lung. Which was diagnosed as leaking scar tissue. I was prescribed Prednisone (40mg/day) for a week, along with antibiotics. This is my first experience with Prednisone. I will say it has helped calm down the leaking scar tissue and I have not had any more coughing up blood. My problems have been with the side effects. And as usual for me, I seem to have them all. The worst are restless sleep, itching, and irritability. Thank goodness the last dose was today and now maybe I can catch up on some sleep. I am definitely very irritable and moody this past week. I could have called the doctor, but what would have been the point? I am sure he would have adjusted the dosage, but then would I have to have taken a smaller dosage for longer? Pretty much moot at this point. Just curious if anyone else has not really enjoyed their Prednisone. I have a follow up visit this Thursday and will discuss it with my doctor. Thanks for listening. Take care and God Bless!

  1. glad you're home and on the mend. I've been on Prednisone more times than I care to remember for different ailments. I am also extremely irritable, and that's putting in lightly. I also became ravenous and want to eat everything in site. Definitely restless at night. Although it is great for inflammation. Glad you got through. Blessings ❤️

    1. ,
Sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I imagine losing her after twenty years together is a very hard thing to deal with. Now your brother with cancer of the tonsils, that is terrible. I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prayers.
Leon retired from the website, I guess. One day he was here, and the next gone. We all miss him. He was so nice and well liked. Hang in there SusanK. Hopefully things will go smoothly for you in the coming months and years. Even if it was not great news, hearing from you was and always is a pleasure! Take Care and God Bless!

    2. thank you so much for the kind words. I really enjoy this sight, and the things I learn. I won't be a stranger. You take care too!

  2. I personally am allergic to prednisone, but know a few people that do take it for their arthritis and yes then have the same reactions as you, minus the itching, that is a new one to hear! Glad it has helped, feel for your wife if you were / are irritable LOL. I have been on a couple other steroids and they make me more hyperactive it seems. No other problems then that though. Glad things are on the upside for you though and hoping Thursday will prove to be fruitful in why the bleeding happened for sure. Take care and get some rest!

    1. and SusanK,
Thanks for the replies. I finally got some decent sleep last night. Took the final dose of Prednisone yesterday. I do feel a bit less irritable this morning. The itching wasn't bad, just felt like something lightly tickling me in spots. I did eat like I was constantly starved. Hopefully the results of the mycobacterial test will be back. You all take care and God Bless!

    2. Hi again, Dminor - I am glad to hear you have gotten past this course of steroid (prednisone), therapy now. It's understandable how you were feeling using this dose (40 mg) for a week. Sometimes the side effects can make one feel the treatment is more troublesome than the disease - I get that! However, in this case, I believe the treatment of the scar tissue/bleeding was of primary concern. I would also hope that since this is behind you now, you would tend to agree.
I can tell you that when I went through radiation therapy (48 consecutive days) - I was struggling with the treatment, side effects, and simultaneous other challenging treatments. Like you, I forced my way through it. I could not have done it without my family's support and encouragement. Now that is is behind me (2 1/2 years now), I am grateful. And the memory is still there, but it fades little by little each day.

I'm waiting right here with you for the results - praying for the best outcome!
      Stay strong, Dminor!!
      Warmly,
      Leon L (author/moderator)

  3. , Prednisone for me is a love/hate relationship. It 1st makes me want to clean everything in site. Then appetite really increases and than I can’t sleep. So follows that by irritability. It’s a life saver when sick, dealing with inflammation & just a strong powerful drug that can do wonders to keep you healthier but with some nasty side effects for most people. My mom had MS & she was on many pills a day. Her skin on hands looked thin and fragile & sort of translucent. I’m happy I haven’t had to take it in years but would not give a second thought if told I needed it as it can save your life. Just good to know beforehand some of the negative symptoms so you won’t think you’re going nuts and can prepare for some of the not so nice side effects of prednisone, get better quick & wean off.
