Polycythemia

I have been diagnosed with polycythemia as a result of COPD and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I am wondering if anyone else has had the diagnosis and whether the treatment was able to eliminate it since it is secondary polycythemia. I am also wondering if anyone experiences urinary incontinence when they are out of breath and how they deal with the issue. My pulmonologist was not familiar with this side effect even though I have read that individuals with COPD may experience it.

  1. Hi white4938, and thanks for your post. You've brought up some valid concerns. I am hopeful that others will chime in with their own personal experiences managing both secondary polycythemia and incontinence that can be associated with this condition.

We do have an interesting article, published right here on our COPD.net community, which focuses on incontinence, which I thought might interest you. For your convenience, here is a link to that article: https://copd.net/living/an-embarrassing-situation. I do hope you find it to be helpful in a practical way.

    All the best,

    1. Hi again, white - it's been awhile since we spoke here! I do hope you are doing okay. Last time we spoke, I was able to share a pertinent article for you about COPD and incontinence.
Now, as it turns out, one of our writers and my colleague, , has authored an article on polycythemia, which I thought might be of interest to you. Should you be interested, here is a link to that brand new material: https://copd.net/living/polycythemia. I do hope you find this to be helpful to read.
      Wishing you well,

      1. thank you. I also read the article on pulmonary hypertension which was informative. I am being tested for it later in the month.

      2. Hi white - thanks for such a prompt reply. Sometimes and for some folks with a COPD diagnosis, other diseases, often referred to as comorbidities, can accompany the primary diagnosis (COPD). Perhaps this is what you are experiencing now.
I will wish you 'good luck!' when you are next being tested for hypertension. Please do check back and let us know how this all turns out for you.
And of course, please continue to participate in our online community, as often and for as long as you like. We appreciate your membership here with all of us.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
