PFT low MIP

Hi, I saw a pulmonologist due to inability to inhale fully like before. MIP was 34 and MEP was 80. I had restricted pattern in PFT and have mostly right sided stiffness with cervical stenosis. I was wondering other than myopathy or neuromuscular disease that can be diagnosed, is there an alternate reason for the low MIP value such as degenerative disc diseases or something more common? The reason for asking it I am looking to preserve my lung function if possible to address the underlying condition. Currently not on any medication and I experience rib pain (heart issues ruled out) and it is very difficult to breathe during common cold or flu/Covid..

The problem started when I was 35 with symptoms of rib pain and leg weakness

I asked both the pcp and pulmonologist but they are not sure. Should I discuss this with a neuromuscular specialist or rheumatologist?

CT showed the following
1. Diffuse bronchial wall thickening without evidence for pneumonia or
pulmonary fibrosis.
2. Scattered calcified granulomata.

  1. Hi Nesjs, and welcome! I see you are a new member here, having joined earlier today in the afternoon. We are glad to see you already engaging with the community through this, your first post.
You may be aware we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), but your concerns certainly warrant a reply.
I am somewhat surprised the primary care physician (PCP), and the pulmonologist did not or, were not able, to offer an opinion or suggestion about the (low) MIP reading. (I am assuming the acronym MIP, as you used it, refers to maximum inspiratory pressure). If this is so, it may be related to the restrictive lung pattern or disease, which you shared was identified in the pulmonary function test (PFT).
My suggestion, after reading the results of the CT scan, is to find other doctor(s) to manage your present medical condition. You can certainly see a specialist in neurology as well as rheumatology. You may also want to look for a more capable pulmonologist.
    What do you think?
