Hello, I'm Bob 71 yrs. old. I was diagnosed with severe emphysema in April of this year. I was never diagnosed with emphysema at all till then. It came on very quick. In November of 2022 I could walk a mile without taking a break, then wham it hit me bad by February. Had a PFT and they said severe, but thru the winter I gained a quick 13 lbs - all on my gut. I'm only 5'6" and normally about 140 lbs. So I could feel my diaphram literally pushing against my gut. So I'm trying to lose the belly fat. Reading your stories about exercise and treadmills has inspired me to get on mine starting tomorrow. Thank you all!!

  1. Hi. , Bob, Welcome to our community and thank you for chiming in here with how you are doing. Sorry to hear about your recent health challenges. It's tough when things change so quickly. Although, it sounds like you are facing it head on -- and that's commendable. Getting back on the treadmill is a good idea to help you gain control of your health. Listen to your body, and don't hesitate to celebrate the victories, big or small. If you need company or support during your journey, feel free to drop us a line anytime. You are not alone in this journey. Wishing you all the best. John. community moderator.

    1. Hi Bob! Glad you came to join us! Hey a little thing I learned on here that has helped me out when I found that helped with that diaphram against the gut feeling was to eat smaller meals more often as healthy as you can keep them. It has done wonders and it seems to help with weight loss too for then the body is always working on digesting so things don't sit around as long. Add that with exercise and hopefully more relief for you. Just a thought from this COPDer. Doris

      1. Thanks Doris! I appreciate any tips. I forgot to mention that I'm on Trelegy and Albuterol inhalers.

        1. Morn Bob an all here:
I am in a similar boat as you Bob, as I am 72 with servre emphysema.
In Canada the doc's rate in 3 stages 'mild, moderate, n servre' unlike the U S which has stage 1 thru 4.
our height is same but with my ' addition gut gain' I am at 165 lbs.
I have been diagnosed with copd for a few yrs now, in the begging I could walk a fair distance and work as well. Today I get really out of breath walking to the washroom n back. total of 100 steps to n back. Getting dressed is hard a bath/shower is a dreaded challenge.
I just did my 2nd walk test at Lung Doc's office, [1st one 6 months ago- could not do more then 2 minutes then breathing attack] this one on tuesday I thought : go real slow all will be ok. 1/2 way thru the RN stopped my test my heart rate went real low then when stopped went super high??? I told her I felt fine but she insisted on stopping it. Met Doc after it n nothing said bout it other then trying again to get me into an exercise program again [not much luck on that issue, nothing that I am doing to prevent it just circumstances beyond my control. Doc did book a ct test,
I am going to talk to my GP about results of the 'walk test' If a very slow walk on treadmill caused? whatever happened on treadmill, will more exercise really be wise? is my thoughts,
I want to b able to breathe easier n revisit my yard n neighborhood but....
          So long story short,
If you can exercise n use tread mill with out negative results " DO IT" as the time will come when you can not n it comes way 2 quick imo.
