Is there a causal relationship between exposure to asbestos and COPD?

I’ve read extensively that if you suffered from asthma or chronic bronchitis as a child and then years later you were exposed to asbestos fibers for more then 4 years, your current copd was undoubtedly caused by asbestos exposure.

  1. That's an interesting question, . We are not medical experts, but, I would imagine anything that weakens the lungs could contribute to the development of COPD. Were you exposed to asbestos after childhood asthma or chronic bronchitis? If so, what does your doctor think? Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Yes I was, when in the military. I was stationed on a US naval destroyer that was built on n 1942. They used asbestos extensively. My current primary care physician says in his opinion bc I did not smoke my lung damage was caused by asbestos exposure leading to copd 50 years later.

      1. Thank you so much for your service, , and thanks for these photos as well! It is always good to put names with faces. Is the adorable little guy your grandson? I love that smile! I am guessing your doctor has seen enough of COPD to know what he is talking about. Has the Navy accepted responsibility and given you full VA benefits for your care? How are you doing now with treatment? - Lori (Team Member)
