Going to Gym with Oxygen

Has anyone here exercised at a gym successfully with portable oxygen concentrators? I'm planning a trial of this soon because my pulmonary rehab has run out. Thank you.

  1. Thanks for posting your question, Bonnie. I'm certain that some of our community members would like to share their own experiences with rehabilitation, exercise, oxygen and oxygen concentrators. You may want to consider posting the inquiry at our Facebook page which is all things COPD. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/copddotnet/

    1. I'm not ready to go public with my COPD, but thanks for the suggestion.

      1. Using oxygen while walking on treadmill, and using an oximeter to monitor my oxygen level, how low should I allow my oxygen level to fall before I slow down and decrease my speed or exertion level?

        1. Hi MrsFord - First, let me commend you for using the treadmill, even though you have to use oxygen too. It's great that you realize how important exercise is!

The answer to your questions depends a lot on what your "normal" oxygen saturations are. Another factor is how you feel when you're oxygen is beginning to get lower - you are probably a very good judge of how much you can handle.

I would recommend that you ask your doctor how he/she feels is "safe" for you. Each individual is different so you should go with whatever your doctor is comfortable with.
