Has anyone experienced degradation with the effectiveness of azithromycin?

In late December, 2019 and early January, 2020 I had several events related to my COPD. This question deals with one of them - secondary lung infection.

For many years I have used the Gold Standard Azithromycin to beat the infections. However in this time I used two tranches of the antibiotic with no positive results. I monitor my SpO2 with an Oximeter. As an aside, buying one was one of the best things I have done since letting bronchitis develop into COPD. Peace of mind knowing oxygen level is okay and early warning before I physically know that all is not right in my lungs.

I contacted my Biological Regeneration Doctor where I get an IV treatment twice a week. I started on it after my worn out knees no longer functioned but got him to add Venus Stem Cell to the solution. I digress. Back to the infection.

The Nurse brought a soluble 1 gram antibiotic ( Ceftriaxona ) that she added to the IV solution that is either 500 ml or 1 liter. I can say that, in my experience, adding an antibiotic to an IV solution is the best way to administer an antibiotic. In a matter of hours I was feeling much better and my SpO2 levels were above 90% by the next day. It took a while but has anyone experienced degradation of Azithromycin?

Looking forward to many more battles and many more years to fight them.

  1. Hi !

Thank you so much for sharing. I greatly admire your strength and perseverance in addressing your COPD. While I am not able to answer your question, it is my hope that someone(s) in our community will. Thanks again and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

    All the best,
    John M. (COPD.net Team)

    1. Hi John: Thanks for kind words. Only a user of Azithromycin will be able to comment on the effectiveness of the antibiotic. Up until the event I described it had always worked very effectively. Three pills and then a week with no aditional pills - as thbey said the Gold standard. Again thanks and I will watch for any other comments. In meantime I have many stories that are intertwined with leading to COPD. I will start posting to Stories but not sure if all will, be accepted. We shall see.SpO2 at 93 with 60 bpm. For me just great.

      1. Hi Leon: I think that I had a different variedty of a bacterial infection than I usually get. I have to admit that I have ignored the Rule : No animals where one eats-sleeps-pr sits. At the same time I had a problem with my eyes where I thought I had sdet up a "sand" division of a "sand and gravel " operation. That was cured with Alin which contains a drug reported to have been tested against the Wuhan Virus. The third event was the Flu. At least I think that is what it was. It started with fever that was broken with drug. The use of anti-Flu medicine took care of the problem. I have to say I had not had the Flu for many years and actually thought I might die from hypothermia . More tests that I passed. Again thanks for your reply. Stay strong. Sleibhin

      2. Hi again, Sleibhin, and thanks for your reply and explanation, below. Perhaps the Azithromycin wasn't degraded at all. Perhaps whatever it was that you did have was outside the parameters of this particular antibiotic. You have actually described many different scenarios, which may have required different medications for treatment altogether. Based on what you've shared here, it might be possible. Did you ever discuss this with your physician?

        Wishing you well,

    2. Hi Leon: Just realized I had not answered your question about talking with Pulmonologist. The last time I saw him was 10/06/2011 - ( sum of numbers equals 11( my Angel number ). At the time my SpO2 was 70% or lower. I spent few hours in his emergency treatment room and then sent on my way as he knew there ewas no way I was going to hospital. He told me that I would need to use supplemental oxygen for remainder of my life. Fooled him- after one month SpO2 levels back above 90% I have my bronchodilators, antibiotics, Nebulizer with CombiVent and of course a very large tank of medical grade oxygen. I send him email now and then and onevday I will go for Spirometer exam to see how much of my lungs are still effective. At diagnosis of COPD the number was 50%. I will not be surprised if the number has increased as I believe COPD is curable- one just has to figure out what orders to give to one's survival center. Actually at this time rheumatoid arthritis is more a challenge for me. Fighting the good fightb and knowing I will win. Sleibhin
