Biopsy through your trachea?! Not good for us with COPD?

A doctor's office mentioned getting a biopsy (of something on pancreas) by putting tube down my trachea, while doing an ultrasound. That didn't sound good to me. Asked if could be done another way, so a doctor who does it says it could be done with needle but may be more difficult cause so small. (She didn't mention waiting till the tumor or whatever is bigger). That will be my next question to them. But didn't think have a tube put down my trachea is a good idea. Anyone with Copd experience this?

  1. Hi . I wish you didn't have to go through this procedure, but I hope you take comfort in knowing that many, many people here have been through it. Hopefully, they will chime in with their experiences. Some people have biopsies of tumors done through the trachea and others have samples taken of mucus in the lungs so their doctors can better target infections. Most report a sore throat for a day or two after, but very few other lasting side effects. Regardless, I hope the results are good news. Keep us posted, if you don't mind. 1. With level 3 copd? (40% lung function) On oxygen at night and when walking? Had RUL removed?

      1. Hi . I'm not sure what the conditions were for others. I'm sure that all makes the decision more complicated. Have you considered a second opinion? - Lori (Team Member)

    2. I had this procedure of biopsy down the throat. It caused a rupture in my lung, allowing for a partial collapse and then an emergency pneumothorax operation. It also damaged my vocal cords slightly. Read the possible 'things that can go sideways' with this procedure. I will never do it again.

      1. I didn't have that extreme of an issue with mine but I did wakeup in the middle and tried to move. The doctor started screaming "Why is he awake??? Get him back under!!!!!" I think they were afraid I was going to have a similar tearing situation to yours. It just goes to show how much we have to pay attention to as patients these days! You are not alone. Keep on keepin' on, DPM

      2. Thanks for your info! Something's telling me not to do it, and your statement verifies it! One of the doctors called asking what were my concerns, and
she said that a biopsy of pancreas can upset it and cause pancreatitis! I'll try your search!
