So, I started down a new trail today with my ENT (Ear, Nose, & Throat) Doctor, and I learned a lot. My hearing got tested first. I kind of already had an idea, so no big surprises there. I have 53% hearing loss across both ears, with moderate to severe/complete high frequency loss, getting worse the higher the sound, all the way to nothing.
Suddenly I understand why I cannot hear most people talking unless they are facing me, and why I have difficulty understanding much of what they are saying, from the distortion of not being able to hear consonant sounds. Basically, I hear less than half of the vowel sounds and almost none of the rest. It has been gradual, so I've gotten used to it and didn't realize it had progressed this far. She recommended hearing aids, but I want to wait as long as possible on that, at least until I can resolve some of this other stuff.
On to the next tests, the doctor passed a tube camera up through my nose and sinuses on the left-hand side, which is blocked by the deviated septum. It went down my throat so she could look at the damage to my esophagus from the neck injuries, and we discussed my barium swallow test and the resultant therapy for that. Then we talked about the dizziness, and she scheduled videonystagmography (VNG) and Electronystagmography (ENG) testing for brain/inner ear function. Say that fast with a mouth full of Doritos! That will happen in June about 3 weeks from now. Then at some point after all that, balance therapy. I was unaware there was such a thing! I hope it doesn't involve a balance beam!
I had my prostate MRI Tuesday, and will get the results next Tuesday. Whew! It's been a long week. But I feel like now I should be making some progress. I still have to yet go through the cataract thing next, and the, finally, the Pulmonologist for all that. I hope I can stay healthy enough for all this activity now. I will report back when there is more to tell. Safe travels, y'all!
