Trelegy Ellipta (fluticasone furoate, umeclidinium, and vilanterol inhalation powder) is a prescription inhaler used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Trelegy Ellipta combines 3 medicines to decrease the inflammation in the lungs and relax the muscles in the airways.1

Trelegy Ellipta is often used by people who are taking Breo Ellipta (fluticasone furoate and vilanterol) and need additional treatment or those who are currently taking Incruse Ellipta (umeclidinium) and Breo.1,2

Trelegy Ellipta should be used as a maintenance treatment. It should not be used as a rescue inhaler for sudden COPD symptoms.1

What are the ingredients in Trelegy Ellipta?

The active ingredients of Trelegy Ellipta are:1

  • Fluticasone furoate
  • Umeclidinium
  • Vilanterol

Fluticasone furoate is an inhaled corticosteroid. Umeclidinium is an anticholinergic, and vilanterol is a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA).1

How does Trelegy Ellipta work?

Each of the active ingredients in Trelegy Ellipta works in different ways to help treat the symptoms of COPD:1

  • Fluticasone furoate helps reduce the inflammation in the lungs. Inflammation in the lungs can cause breathing problems in people with COPD.
  • Umeclidinium works by targeting receptors to relax the muscles in the airways.
  • Vilanterol relaxes the muscles in the airways by targeting beta2-receptors.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects include:1

  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Thrush in the mouth and throat
  • Joint pain
  • Flu
  • Runny nose and sore throat
  • Constipation
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Cough, hoarseness

Trelegy Ellipta may also cause serious side effects, including:1

  • Pneumonia
  • Weakened immune system/increased risk of infections
  • Reduced adrenal function
  • Allergic reactions like rash, hives, or breathing problems
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Tremors
  • High blood sugar
  • Urinary retention

If your breathing problems quickly worsen after taking Trelegy Ellipta, contact 9-1-1 right away.1

Other things to know

Trelegy Ellipta should not be used by people with a severe allergy to milk or any of the ingredients in the drug.1

After each dose of Trelegy Ellipta, rinse your mouth with water and spit the water out. This helps prevent infections in the mouth and throat.1,3

Before starting Trelegy Ellipta, tell your doctor if you have:1

  • Heart problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Thyroid problems
  • Diabetes
  • Liver problems
  • Osteoporosis
  • Immune system problems
  • Eye problems such as glaucoma or cataracts
  • Prostate or bladder problems
  • Exposure to chickenpox or measles

There is not enough data to know if Trelegy Ellipta is safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding. Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.1

Trelegy Ellipta may interact with other medicines. Before beginning treatment for COPD, tell your doctor about all your health conditions and any other drugs, vitamins, or supplements you are taking. This includes over-the-counter drugs.
