Electronic cigarettes

Needing to quit smoking, though so far unsuccessful. Are electronic cigarettes less likely to continue to diminish my breathing (emphysema)?

I've tried them in the past, but they make me cough quite violently. Is there a type/brand that makes you cough less? Thanks

  1. ,
I used the E-Cig method to help me quit smoking. That was before I had mycobacterial pneumonia and bleeding lungs. After the pneumonia and a week in ICU was when I was diagnosed with COPD. I only used the E-Cig before that because I was able to slowly cut down the amount of nicotine in the e-liquid. There were 2 available liquids. PG and VG or a combo of both. PG being propylene glycol and VG being vegetable glycerin. I always used straight VG. It did make me have a hard time catching my breathe at times, but never made me cough. Since the FDA cracked down on the e-liquids, I am not sure what is available these days. Which liquid you use depends on your preference. I quit the E-Cig many years ago. Like a dozen or so years. I know the VG liquid makes the most vapor. The PG makes a lot less vapor but carries more flavor. After I stopped the E-Cig, I went the nicotine pouch route. That seemed to work pretty well for me. I could also control the amount of nicotine in the pouches. After the pneumonia, I quit nicotine entirely and have never gone back. You could also go the patch route to get your nicotine and slowly wean yourself from nicotine. I think that anything that you inhale into your lungs that is not oxygen, is probably bad for you. Have you talked to your medical team for help quitting? Nicotine is one of the hardest substances to quit. I am glad I did. Get some type of nicotine replacement that does not involve inhaling non-oxygen substances into your lungs. Good luck. Take care and God Bless!

    1. Thank you very much for the information and for your encouragement. Unfortunately I am allergic to the patches (which work quite well) currently using lozenges which spoil the taste of food, so off to an e-cig shop next week. I've read about pouches but have never seen them for sale - I live in France.

  2. Well done! Stay the course, nicotine is a sad bedfellow to be sure. I quit 2 years ago after I collapsed and awoke in ICU. There is NO shame in still relying on a crutch to keep from smoking or vaping, it is far better to use a patch than to continue wrecking lungs. I still use a patch now and then, especially since my wife still smokes.

    1. Unfortunately I'm allergic to patches. Vaping seems a reasonable aid, so I'll investigate that further.
Thanks very much for your support.
      Kind regards
