Coughing.

Hi, just wondered what you have found helps to calm down the coughing.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi CarolineR. Coughing for me, being a COPD sufferer, means expelling mucus from my lungs and respiratory system. What works for me is using pursed lip breathing to calm myself down and gain control of the cough. Then I use the huff coughing technique to expel the mucus. It works every time. I also use my Acapella device to help loosen the mucus in my lungs. Staying hydrated also helps a great deal. If you are not familiar with the breathing techniques, look them up on YouTube and you will see demonstrations of the techniques. I also take Mucinex daily to help keep the mucus moving out of my respiratory system. If your cough is non-productive and is more of a dry cough, then maybe contact your medical team for help. Hope this helped. Take care and God Bless!

    1. Hi, thanks for the reply.
It's not a dry cough, it's quite productive. I'm quite new to COPD, and I'm kind of searching online for tips from sufferers. My coughing comes and goes for some reason and anything that eases it will really help.
I've just brought a flutter gadget and it has helped loosening the phlegm.
I will look into breathing techniques.
      Thanks again.

      1. Hi. Thank you for your question -- it is a good one. I see you received a good response from above. And I would like to say that she has offered many of the same tips that I would offer for you -- from a respiratory therapist's perspective. It is great to hear that you have purchased a flutter valve. If you need tips on how best to use it, you may find this (https://copd.net/clinical/flutter-valves-acapellas) article helpful. We also have an article about breathing techniues, such as the HUFF COUGH mentioned above (https://copd.net/living-with-copd/breathing-strategies). That said, I have a question for you? Is this productive cough something you experience on a typical day? Or is it a new symptoms for you? John. community moderator.
