COPD and other ailments

My Mum has COPD from smoking, 83 years and bouncing from steroids to antibiotics every couple of months, please could anyone offer advice on diet, natural remedies etc, dizziness is an issue as is osteoporosis, i think allergies are a factor too, thankyou

  1. Hi CM1082, and thanks for your post. My heart goes out to you (and your Mom, managing with this disease. For many with a COPD diagnosis, the treatment you described (antibiotics and steroids), can be fairly common. Combined with prescribed metered dose inhalers (MDI's), and this can be considered a medication regimen for some patients. Do you feel your Mom is receiving the proper care and medication?
We do have a number of articles, published right here on COPD.net, which focus on COPD and diets. I thought you might find it helpful to begin with this one: https://copd.net/pulmonary-rehab/weight-management/meal-planning.
You also expressed some interest in natural remedies for your Mom. This particular article focuses on that aspect of treating COPD: https://copd.net/answers/expert-answers-vitamins-supplements.
I do hope you find this information is helpful in a practical way.
Thanks for reaching out to us here!

    1. I'm sorry about your Mom. It sounds like she's going through a lot, as are you. Leon offered some great articles that I'm sure you'll find very helpful.

Diet can play a very important role in making sure a person with COPD is getting the right nutrients. Many people with COPD find it helps to eat less, but more frequently. Many factors, including medication play into how a person digests and how much they can tolerate eating in one sitting.

What type of allergies is your Mom suffering from? Seasonal or medication? If it's seasonal, make sure she speaks to her doctor before even taking over the counter medications as you would want to be aware of any interactions with what she's already taking. There are a number of natural remedies that may help with allergies. Certain foods, supplements, essential oils, and even something as simple as a saline nasal spray are a few things that come to mind. But again, before starting anything new, be sure and speak to the doctor.

Please let us know any other ways we can help or other questions you may have.
