COPD and muscle cramps

Does anyone get muscle cramps/Charlie horses when sleeping? This is a fairly new symptom for me and wondering if it is COPD related. I also have gotten a few in my hands as well. Thanks for any input.

  1. ,
COPD does not necessarily cause muscle cramps in and of itself at night. There are several things that can also cause the night cramps. Dehydration, not enough electrolytes, low magnesium, side effects of meds (Symbicort has this side effect), among others. I make sure I drink plenty of water during the day, I drink at least one bottle of sports drink daily for electrolytes, I eat at least one banana for potassium, take daily vitamins for minerals, and exercise to keep muscles toned and loose. Some people drink tonic water daily for the quinine, which is supposed to help muscle cramps. You should contact your medical team and talk to them about your cramping problem. I am sure they will give you a good solution to the problem. Good luck and Take Care.

    1. Hey thanks so much. I just started using symbicort over the last month in a half so I will bring it up to my doc. Otherwise I stay hydrated and walk several times per week. I'll try Gatorade or Powerade and see if maybe that will help more. Thanks again!

      1. I have spasms and muscles cramps, i have had them for years and about 7 years ago my neurologist said “ you have to live with this but I can give you something to help, and today I rarely get them, but I will never forget the pain and discomfort,I would cry with the pain, I hope you can see your medical team for help, as I know they can. Take care.

        1. thank you!

        2. Hi CM9509e2, and thanks for joining in the conversation here. I am glad to hear you no longer have the spasms or muscle cramps. Are you able to share the suggestion your neurologist made at the time with the community.
We appreciate both your input and your feedback.
          All the best,
