Combivent Respimat (ipratropium bromide and albuterol)

Reviewed by: HU Medical Review Board | Last reviewed: May 2023

Combivent® Respimat® (ipratropium bromide and albuterol) is an inhaled drug called a bronchodilator. A bronchodilator is a medicine that makes it easier to breathe. Combivent Respimat is used in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition that damages the lungs and makes it hard to breathe.1

Some people with COPD may still experience breathing problems after using a bronchodilator. They may require a second bronchodilator. Combivent Respimat is often used for people who need a second bronchodilator.1

What are the ingredients in Combivent Respimat?

The active ingredients in Combivent Respimat are ipratropium bromide and albuterol sulfate.1

How does Combivent Respimat work?

Combivent Respimat is a combination of an anticholinergic agent and a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA). Ipratropium bromide is an anticholinergic agent that opens up the airways. Albuterol sulfate is a SABA that relaxes the muscles around the airways.1,2

When the airways are open and the muscles are relaxed, it is easier to breathe.1
