Serevent Diskus (salmeterol xinafoate inhalation powder)

Serevent Diskus is an inhaled medicine and a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA). Serevent Diskus is a long-term maintenance treatment for COPD and should not be used as a rescue medicine for treating sudden breathing problems.

The active ingredient in Serevent Diskus is salmeterol xinafoate.

How does Serevent Diskus work?

LABA medicines, such as Serevent Diskus, helps the muscles around the airways in the lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen when the muscles around the airways tighten, making it difficult to breathe.

What are the possible side effects of Serevent Diskus?

For patients in clinical trials that were treated with Serevent Diskus, common side effects included:

  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Muscle pain
  • Respiratory infection
  • Throat irritation

Other side effects caused by treatment with Serevent Diskus include: chest pain, tremors, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, nervousness, high blood glucose levels and low blood potassium levels. These are not all the possible side effects of Serevent Diskus. Patients should talk to their doctor about what to expect with treatment with Serevent Diskus.

Things to know about Serevent Diskus

Patients who are allergic to milk proteins or any of the ingredients of the medication should not take Serevent Diskus. Before starting Serevent Diskus, patients should tell their healthcare professionals about all medical conditions, particularly if they:

  • Have heart problems
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have seizures
  • Have thyroid problems
  • Have diabetes
  • Have liver problems

While on Serevent Diskus, other medicines containing LABA should not be used. Before starting treatment with Serevent Diskus, patients should talk to their doctor about all medications (prescription and over-the-counter), herbal supplements, and vitamins they are taking. Patients should tell their doctor if they are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast feeding since It is not known if Serevent Diskus can harm an unborn baby or pass into breast milk.

People with asthma who take LABA medicines such as salmeterol xinofate, the active ingredient in Serevent Diskus, have an increased risk of death from asthma problems. Serevent Diskus should only be prescribed for asthma patients who are taking other long-term asthma control medications but their asthma is still not well controlled.

Dosing information

Serevent Diskus should be taken twice daily as 1 inhalation (50mcg of salmeterol), about 12 hours apart at the same time each day.
