adverse effects xanax,risperidone

Mother 88 yr, end stage copd, in nursing home, they are giving here xanax and risperidone. Should we be concerned about adverse effects? Any studies or references you can provide we can show them?

  1. Hi jimi and thanks for your post. While we cannot provide medical advice or diagnostics over the internet (for your own safety), your concerns certainly warrant a reply.
This may be something you want to speak about in earnest with the physician providing care to your mom. In addition, you may want to become more familiar with these medications yourself. That will put you in a better position to speak with the physician. Towards that end, I would suggest you do some light research (the internet is a good place). Pfizer manufactures Xanax while Johnson & Johnson (Janssen Pharmaceuticals) manufactures Resperidone. Please do check back and let us know how you (and she!) are doing. All the best, Leon (site moderator)

    1. Hi jimi - I commend you on your concern for your mother. It's always nice to see a patient that has family behind them advocating for the best care possible.

As Leon said, we can't give medical advice, but whatever your concerns are should certainly be taken up with her healthcare team. One of things I will say though is that COPD can bring with it much anxiety and panic due to the inability to catch ones breath. Very often a doctor will prescibe a drup similiar to Xanax to "take the edge off" and make the person feel more comfortable. I'm sure your main concern is making sure that your mom is as relaxed and untroubled as possible.

Most doctors are aware of concerns related to side effects of medications and are ususally willing to give you the pros and cons.

I wish you and your family the best in caring for your mom.

      Regards,
