Confusing diagnosis

Hi everyone. Im 55 and a 40 yr smoker. I was told I had mild COPD 14 months ago. I stopped smoking the day they told me. I had a CT scan of my lungs a few months ago. It stayed I had mild emphysema with scattered fibrosis with no consolidation in both lungs. All I was told was get another CT scan in a year. He didn’t seem concerned. I mentioned the Fibrosis and he said you have COPD. I made an appointment to see a pulmonary Dr for a second opinion. I was told fibrosis can be slowed and that some are harmless. Confused and just don’t know what to think.

Leon (site moderator) is right on. I’m going through the same thing, but, I would be hard pressed to give up my doctors. I’m 73, smoked a long time, and quit the same way you did. The important thing to me is, that it’s your mind and body and you are the only one in charge of it. Don’t stick with anyone you don’t feel comfortable with. Live day by day and make changes as you see fit.

Hi angie62 and thanks for your post. I’m sorry you find yourself in this situation now. There is a difference between COPD (an obstructive disease) and pulmonary fibrosis (a restrictive disease).
It’s frustrating to have two different specialists where each one was not able to provide you with sufficient information, or seem concerned, about treating your disease(s).
Although it may be challenging, I would suggest you look for a more compassionate and capable physician who can provide the evaluations, diagnoses and treatments that will help you.
Please do check back and let us know how you’re doing.
    All the best,
    Leon (site moderator)
