Has anyone had Pulmonox Zephyr Valves procedure done?

Anybody on site had the procedure done? If so where? Insurance carrier? Hospital? Current outcome? How long ago?

Hi Karen, and thanks for your reply. You must feel good to know you are a candidate. If the doctor will not share other patient names with you (HIPAA regulations), perhaps you could discuss with him/her (in earnest) all the pros (and cons) of having this procedure done. The doctor should be able to share statistics (how many procedures performed, expected outcomes, successes and failures). What do you think? Leon (site moderator)

I am in the hospital now recovering from the procedure. So far, so good! It is covered by Medicare and other insurance companies

Helen, I am scheduled for the procedure on December 12th and wonder how you are doing after the procedure? Has your FEV1/FVC improved? Hope all is well and thanks for taking any time you can to respond. Regards, Bill

Hi BillMUSC, and thanks for your post. I’m hopeful you will hear back from Helen in time. Are you able to discuss what to expect following the procedure with your doctor? That also may provide you with the type of insight you’re looking for.
Please, if you can, do check back and let us know how it all works out for you. We’re all here to lend support!

    Hi Helen,
I was told today that I was “qualified” for this procedure. I would love to hear about yours and now that it’s 2-months after – you are a GREAT reference. I am not permitted to leave contact info, so I’m not sure how we can talk??? Any help from the moderator(s) would be appreciated!!!
    Thanks,
    sewingkaren

Houston Texas Houston Methodist. It is outpatient surgery. Takes 30 – 60 min. I don’t know if it is covered
By insurance. I found a number to call but I don’t know if that’s allowed.

How do you know if you’re a candidate. I believe that this procedure is a hope for people with emphysema .

    Hi Rex1,
I was told today (7-17-2019) that I qualify for the Zephyr Endobronchial Valve Treat procedure.

I have had COPD for a long time. In addition to all my PFTs and an updated PFT, I had the following tests done: 1) Echocardiogram,
    2) CT chest high resolution, and 3) NM lung quantitative differental function ventilation/perfusion.

Medicare WILL pay, so it’s now up to me to decide. I’m trying to get some feedback from people who have been through it! I hope this helps!

    God Bless,
    sewingkaren

Hi SewingKaren and thanks for joining in the conversation at this point as well. The fact that Medicare will pay must be good news for you to hear. I’m glad to hear it (for you) as well. I don’t recall seeing that many of HU members have actually had this procedure.
However, I do have two suggestions. The first is to look over this article by our own John Bottrell. In it, he reviews the procedure. Here is the link, for your convenience: https://copd.net/clinical/endobronchial-valve-system/. The second suggestion would be for you to speak to patients who have had this procedure performed. The doctor who you are considering to perform the procedure may be able to provide you with those references.
    What do you think?

Hi Brucifer and thanks for your post. I recall seeing a post or two in which our members have made comments about these valves. Perhaps you will hear back in response to your inquiry. If you want know more about them, I would suggest you do a GOOGLE search using the words ‘zephyr valve’ – you will find various reports and information about the procedure. Are you a candidate for this form of treatment? Leon (site moderator)
