Are chest pain and shortness of breath a flare-up?

I was recently hospitalized for observation to r/o cardiac problem when I c/o chest pain and shortness of breath. The PCP physician didn’t call it a flare up of my COPD but said my chest and ribs were inflamed from coughing. Would this be the same as a flare up ?

Hi nonna and thanks for you post. I’m sorry to hear of your recent hospitalization. As you may know, typical exacerbations can be characterized by various symptoms which can vary from person to person. I thought you might gain additional insight from this article: https://copd.net/living/flare-ups/. Although the symptoms you described (chest pain, shortness of breath), can accompany a COPD flare-up, they can also be characteristic of other medical conditions too. You may want to speak about this further with your physician. All the best, Leon (site moderator)
