Does anyone else have a non-productive cough with wheezing?

Does anyone else have a deep, raspy, usually non-productive cough that sometimes ends with a loud wheezing sound?

Does productive mean mucus??? If so, yes I get a non productive cough and wheezing together, I haven’t figured out if there’s any correlation between the two when that happens(yet).

Hi Dxred and thanks for your post. In general the term ‘productive’ when it comes to COPD and coughing refers to the ‘production’ of mucus in the airways. Wheezing, in general, is the ‘whistling’ noise that can be heard with or without a stethoscope. It is usually caused by constricted airways and/or airways that are congested with mucus. I hope this sheds some additional light on the issue for you. All the best, Leon (site moderator)

Yes, especially at night and in bed. I take Mucinex twice daily as prescribed by my doctor. I’ve been taking this approximately 1-1/2 years. I usually try to take it about 3 hours before bed, so after its been in my system a bit it helps my cough to be productive. I hope you find something to work for you, Good Luck!

John2746 – that’s a great question. I’m sure you’ll get input from others in the community as well. But, a non-productive cough with wheezing is something that people complain about with COPD. They may be connected or they may just be two symptoms that you’re experiencing together. You’ll want to watch for any changes in the cough – such as it suddenly becoming productive. Any changes should trigger a conversation with the doctor or at least more monitoring.

    Regards,
