GERD and Hiatus Hernia

I would be interested to hear more on the affects that these have on COPD. For me, these also flared up when I had a COPD exacerbation. I had acidic fluid flushing up in my throat and small amounts would enter my upper lungs and of course cause coughing. I am on Nexium now and it has settled down substantially and also am different inhalers which seem to be doing a better job. Still pretty new at this since my diagnosis end of January. I've had my first pretty good week and if this is as good as it gets for me now, I'm fine with it. Still adjusting to the limitations that I come up against unexpectedly as I discover this "new" way of living. I am going to have an Upper GI x-ray in the morning to assess my hiatus hernia. It's been 30 years since last x-ray. On the bright side, if surgery is necessary, at least it's a lot more pleasant than considering it for a brief second 30 years ago!!

  1. Meg - It sounds like you're getting a handle on the GERD and Hernia. I'm glad the Nexium appears to help. We have a lot of patients that complain of digestive issues with their COPD - so you're not alone. If you haven't been, I'd suggest you follow the COPD.net Facebook page. You'll probably find many others sharing similar stories and how they're dealing with it. Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/copddotnet/

    1. I was just diagnosed about a month ago. The pulmonary dr knew for two years. I was floored and it explained so much. I keep getting pneumonia and am scheduled for the hernia surgery in January. I have a different dr and am now on medication everyday. The first dr said it was mild and I didn't need anything. The second dr did all kinds of tests and said moderate and to follow directions and we can keep it there. Question.....walking long distances ..across a parking lot and into the back of a store I get so winded. It's absolutely exhausting and scary. I'm still trying to digest the diagnosis. Anyone else have this with walking? Is it normal? Do I need a handicap sticker? I'm only 61.

      1. Hi Paula 18,

First, I want to be clear about your diagnosis. It sounds like you were diagnosed with GERD/Hernia but also have COPD. Is that correct? The symptoms you describe are not uncommon for people with those conditions. The shortness of breath after walking does happen. Please be sure and be very specific with your doctor about your symptoms though. You want to make sure they know everything you're experiencing so they can help you. Your doctor will also be able to determine if a handicap sticker would be something you could use. Sometimes they're given on a temporary basis until the problem resolves and you're feeling better. Your age is certainly in your favor. Stick to the regimen they suggest and hopefully you'll begin to notice improvement.

I wish you the very best!
